Bitcoin pushed toward an eight-month high early on Monday and failed again. CoinDesk reports that the price came within about $500 of its late-September peak before sellers pushed it back under $86,000. It is the second rally in a week to stall at that level.

At 06:42 UTC, CoinGecko showed bitcoin at $85,819, up 1.02% over 24 hours and 2.7% over seven days. The 24-hour range ran from $84,916 to $86,949.

Cardano was the clear outlier. ADA rose 10.77% in 24 hours, from a low of $0.2442 to a high of $0.2719. Solana was flat. Bitcoin's share of total crypto market value stood at 59.2%, against 11.4% for ether, with the whole market valued at about $2.91 trillion.

ETF money came back

Fund flows turned positive. Spot bitcoin ETFs took in $134.4 million over the first two trading days of October, Decrypt reports. That reversed an outflow on September 30. Decrypt links the turn to a weak US jobs report that cooled bets on another Fed rate hike. Our sister site FXcash.com covers that jobs report and the dollar's reaction in its weekly forex recap.

Ether: steady price, thinner market

Ether traded at $2,711.87, up 0.74% on the day. Two CoinDesk stories add context below the price:

  • Liquidity. Ether beat bitcoin in the third quarter, but its market liquidity got thinner, CoinDesk writes, citing CoinGecko data.
  • Staking queues. New stakers now wait about 25 days, with nearly 1.5 million ETH in line. The entry queue is down by more than a quarter since early September, while the exit queue hit its longest of 2026, per CoinDesk.

Sentiment: greedy, but less than last week

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index read 70 on Monday, in "Greed". It has stayed in that zone for all of the past eight days, between 65 on October 4 and 74 on September 28 and October 1.

Also on the wire

Zcash moved its NU7 upgrade onto public testnet ahead of schedule. It cuts the target block time from 75 seconds to 25, with a mainnet launch planned for November, CoinDesk reports.

What to watch next

  • The $87,000 area. Two rallies have now stalled near the late-September peak.
  • ETF flows. The early-October inflows followed a single outflow day.
  • US rates. Decrypt ties the ETF rebound to softer Fed hike bets after the jobs data.
