Bitcoin gave back its weekend recovery and fell 2.02% to $76,831, according to CoinGecko data as of 02:54 UTC on November 3. A fading risk rally on Monday and a fresh run of exchange hacks pushed the Crypto Fear & Greed Index down to 26, its lowest reading in eight days.

Bitcoin

Bitcoin traded between $76,592 and $78,728 over the past 24 hours. It is down 3.86% over seven days. Volume was $25.8 billion.

Cointelegraph reports that Bitcoin fell around 1.7% on Monday as stocks pared early gains driven by hopes of a diplomatic resolution to the US-Iran war. A 7% slide in oil failed to spark a rally in BTC, the outlet said. Our sister site covered the currency side of that story in how US-Iran deal hopes pushed the dollar and oil lower.

The news driving the market

A new wave of hacks

Brazil's Mercado Bitcoin paused deposits and withdrawals after a security breach. CoinDesk says about $40 million was drained from wallets on at least 10 chains. Decrypt reports Tether froze more than 4.5 million USDT tied to the attack. Cointelegraph puts the theft at $46 million and says the exchange stated customer funds and data were safe.

Separately, onchain investigator ZachXBT flagged a suspected $106 million loss by an unidentified EU entity from centralized exchange accounts, according to CoinDesk. The victim and the exchanges involved remain unknown.

Binance hack fallout

Decrypt reports that $2.85 billion of the $6.43 billion stolen from Binance has been frozen or seized, against about 3% in the Bybit hack. North Korea has denied any role and called the FBI's attribution politically motivated, Cointelegraph reports. In South Korea, the regulator is urging exchanges to go beyond the existing 80% cold-storage requirement, per Cointelegraph.

Coinbase and corporate buyers

Morgan Stanley cut its Coinbase price target by 50% and lowered its rating, citing slowing trading and Binance hack fallout, Cointelegraph reports. On a brighter note, New Jersey dropped its staking order and a $5 million penalty against Coinbase, according to Cointelegraph. Decrypt reports Strive bought 124 BTC for about $10 million.

What to watch next

  • US midterms. CoinDesk says traders are watching short positions, exchange withdrawals and key levels for signs of a post-election rebound.
  • Mercado Bitcoin. Watch for any update on when deposits and withdrawals restart.
  • OKX-ICE tokenized stocks. The 30-day objection window is nearing its end, CoinDesk reports, with nearly 70% of the initial companies opting out.
  • Binance recovery. Further freezes or seizures of the stolen funds.
