Bitcoin held near $81,700 on Sunday evening, little changed from this morning, as fresh data showed investors pulling money from US spot bitcoin ETFs for a second straight week. According to Decrypt, the funds have now shed nearly $1 billion in two weeks.

Bitcoin

Bitcoin traded at $81,669 at the time of the CoinGecko snapshot, up 0.52% over 24 hours but down 2.07% over seven days. The 24-hour range ran from $80,672 to $82,178. Spot volume was $19.5 billion. The price sits slightly below the $81,847 level we reported in this morning's edition, so the day has been mostly flat. View the BTC/USD chart.

Ether and the majors

Ether was flat on the day at $2,390 and remains down 5.24% for the week, trading between $2,329.53 and $2,426.58. The other large coins posted small daily gains, but all are lower over seven days. Cardano is the weakest, down 12.7% on the week. View the ETH/USD chart.

Breadth and sentiment

CoinGecko puts total crypto market value at $2.726 trillion and shows a 3.24% fall over 24 hours. That figure does not match the small gains across the largest coins, so we treat it with caution. Bitcoin dominance stands at 60.1% and Ether dominance at 10.7%.

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index from Alternative.me reads 53 (Neutral), down from 55 on Saturday and 63 on Friday. A week ago, on Oct. 11, it stood at 61, and it peaked at 69 on Oct. 12. The trend over eight days is a slow cooling from greed toward neutral.

What moved the market

  • ETF outflows. Bitcoin ETFs lost a net $228.6 million this week after a $681.1 million drain the week before, Decrypt reports, pushing October deep into the red.
  • Calm after Friday's stock scare. CoinDesk writes that the VIX spiked on Friday as stocks dropped, but history, seasonality and a calm bitcoin suggest the fear may fade on Monday. Our sister site covered the AI debt fears that hit stocks and the dollar on Friday.
  • White House departure. Patrick Witt, the White House's crypto chief, announced his departure last week, according to CoinDesk.
  • Arrest and a token slide. HEX founder Richard Heart was detained in an early morning raid in Istanbul, Cointelegraph reports. The same report says Starknet plunged almost 50% as it votes to become a layer 1, and that Bitwise says all signs point to a "Crypto Spring."
  • Stablecoin payments. Stablecoin supply has stalled, but payments jumped 45% to $482 billion so far this year, analytics firm Allium told CoinDesk, as Visa, Mastercard and Stripe add crypto rails.
  • Security. Cysic halted its bridge after an unauthorized mint of 10 million CYS, Cointelegraph reports. The company said mainnet and other systems were not affected.

What to watch next

  1. Monday's open. CoinDesk's analysis points to Monday as the test of whether Friday's stock market fear fades.
  2. ETF flows. Whether the two-week outflow streak Decrypt describes continues into the final stretch of October.
  3. Starknet's L1 vote. Cointelegraph reports the network is voting to become a layer 1 after its token's sharp drop.
  4. Latvia's tax overhaul. Latvia's parliament passed a law that taxes crypto withdrawals above deposits rather than individual trades, and the country eyes crypto tax payments in 2027, according to CoinDesk.
